As a fairly new resident of Christchurch myself, I know how hard it can be to find places to eat and drink that are actually worth your money. So I’ve made it easy for you! Below is a list of recommendations, that I have personally tried myself, and my honest opinions on them, highlighting both the good and bad. As a student, my perspective of the budget may be slightly different from that of a tourist, however, it’s always good to consider prices anyway!
The Thirsty Peacock
Whilst it is expensive compared to others on this list, the Thirsty Peacock offers a first-class dining experience, with an exceptional menu. Sitting right next to the Christchurch Art Gallery, the restaurant provides a private dining experience after a visit. All of the food and drinks were amazing, including my pea risotto which I did have doubts about. It turned out to be the best risotto I’ve ever had! They are also allergy-friendly and able to adapt most of the meals on the menu to make them gluten-free. This restaurant has definitely got to be my personal favourite, making it 100% worth the price!
Thai Chef
This is one of the best Thai restaurants I have tried! I have satay skewers at every Thai restaurant I go to, and these were by far the best I've had so far. There was plenty of sauce, meat, and veggies on all of the meals. The menu was extensive, clearly marked for allergies, and had a range of prices, so it is great for people on different budgets. The staff were friendly, the drinks and food came out fast even though they were busy, and the atmosphere was cosy but still classy and spacious.
Cafe Valentino
Another personal favourite that has everything there is to offer! Cafe Valentino is your stereotypical Italian restaurant, however, the food quality is well above average. All the dishes are large and rich in flavour, and with an extensive menu, there is something for everyone! All pizzas and pasta can also be made gluten-free, with many other dishes also adaptable to any dietary requirements. Not only is the food amazing, but their cocktails are to die for! My go-to - April Sun In Sicily (top left photo)
Arbour Woodfired Pizza
This is a must-visit for all locals and visitors! Located in the scenic town of Lyttelton, this quaint restaurant has a lovely staff and a range of unique pizzas you won't find anywhere else! They also have multiple gluten free and vegan options, so it's perfect for all! Not to mention their tasty drinks too! (I would recommend booking in advance)
Thai Orchid
As a lover of Thai food, I have tried a fair share of Thai restaurants, and the Thai Orchid Restaurant is sharing my N.1 spot with Thai Chef. Super friendly staff, delicious cocktails, and food that will leave your mouth watering! I get so excited every time I come back here, and cannot wait to eat! Not to mention the recent renovations and improvements they have made to the interior, the downstairs is a very intimate environment.
Kaiser Brewery

Now that we’re on the topic of cocktails, why not introduce you to my favourite cocktail place! Although Kaiser is a brewery, (and don’t get me wrong, they do still have amazing beers), their cocktails are something else. I’ve never been so in love with a drink until I had a Kaiser cocktail. The food there is also delicious, and not to mention its perfect location on a rooftop along the Avon River! This side of town is always full of vibrant culture and a must-visit.
The Little Fiddle
I often walk past this place as somewhere to eat for some reason, but after visiting, I have no idea why! The food was super delicious and filling. They had classic Irish & English food, but also options for others, with a mix of traditional and unique flavours that work really well together. The staff are friendly, and the environment is homey. Stay around long enough, and the place turns into a fun dance club with the best music!
The Riverside Market

Located in Central Christchurch City, along the banks of the Avon River, the Riverside Market is an indoor food market with a range of different cuisines. You can purchase light snacks, sweet treats, full meals, or try them all! With seating above the stalls, the market is a perfect place for groups as it caters to all needs and there’s something for everyone, but you can all still sit and eat
together! If you're really into your food, why not try a cooking class in the kitchen upstairs or visit the rooftop bars and restaurants also accessible through the Riverside Market?
